about

The name of this piece came to me after the first idea for the guitar riff appeared to me. It is based on a picking pattern that is much used in American Folk and Fingerstyle tradition. What also came immediately to my mind was that I would use this just as a take off to step into some wild territory. So as usual I was literally overwhelmed by lots of ideas.
First choice for me is always to combine rhythm with a certain harmonic twist and find out where this path could lead me. When I improvise on my acoustic guitar and I close my eyes I often get into this California kind of mood, hard to explain, it is some sort of subconscious thing, a never ending love for a certain warmth and beauty in music. Something that is uplifting and really deep to me.
Right after that I turned on my computer and produced a very quick demo which turned out to be the final form of the song - a procedure I often go through. It is almost like an improvised compostional process - very much the opposite of the hard working note by note workout that I am also familiar with and which can feel like the hardest job on earth...
Anyway, after the first chorus that features the vocal melody followed by piano and choir I felt like going somewhere else without leaving the overall musical concept. This is probably one of my biggest passions in creating music: to let it flow like a wild river, powerful and constant yet unpredictable as it's streams and currents are adventurous to navigate.
In this state of mind this piano passage simply came to me: a new minor key, the falling chromatic classical kind of melody and cadenza. Once I have these ingredients together it is a true pleasure to work on the development and processing of the existing material. The conceptual idea for the whole album was born and I felt that „Folksong“ will be a main source for the further writing process of the entire album with all of its thematic explorations and transformations. At this point i also made the decision to record for the first time in my life with an actual orchestra! And even more important: This album is my first time that I record with my own band! The adventure was about to begin...
